#40 - BIM Protocol

A BIM Protocol is a set of rules and guidelines that govern the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. It is a collaborative effort between all stakeholders in the construction process, including owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and fabricators.


The goal of a BIM Protocol is to ensure that all parties have access to the same information in a consistent format and that they can use that information to make informed decisions about the project. This can lead to significant cost savings and time savings, as well as improved quality and safety.


There are many different BIM Protocols in use, but they typically include the following elements:

  • Data standards: The Protocol defines the data formats and standards that will be used for the project. This ensures that all parties are using the same data, which can be difficult to achieve when using different software programs.

  • Data exchange: The Protocol defines how data will be exchanged between different parties. This can be done through a variety of methods, such as file sharing, cloud-based platforms, or direct data integration.

  • Data security: The Protocol defines how data will be secured to protect it from unauthorized access or disclosure. This is important for projects that involve sensitive data, such as proprietary information or personal data.

  • Data quality: The Protocol defines the quality standards that will be used for the project. This ensures that the data is accurate, complete, and up-to-date.

BIM Protocols are becoming increasingly important as BIM becomes more widely adopted in the construction industry. They can help to improve communication and collaboration between stakeholders, and they can lead to significant cost savings and time savings.

Here are some examples of BIM Protocols:

  • The National BIM Standard (NBS): The NBS is a set of guidelines for the use of BIM in the United States. It was developed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

  • The BuildingSMART Alliance Protocol: The BuildingSMART Alliance Protocol is a set of guidelines for the use of BIM in the United Kingdom. It was developed by the BuildingSMART Alliance, which is a consortium of organizations involved in the construction industry.

  • The Singapore BIM Guide: The Singapore BIM Guide is a set of guidelines for the use of BIM in Singapore. It was developed by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore.

These are just a few examples of the many BIM Protocols that are in use around the world. As BIM becomes more widely adopted, it is likely that more and more BIM Protocols will be developed.
