Building Information Modeling is the term used by software developers to explain their capabilities. As such, the definition of BIM technology is yet to be defined properly. So to address this confusion, it is better to describe solutions that do not use BIM technology. Which contains tools that create the following kinds of models:
Models that contain 3D data only and no (or few) object attributes. These models are only used for graphics visualization and have no intelligence on the object level. They are extremely good for visualization but provide very little assistance to data integration and analysis. For example, Google's Sketch Up tool is extremely good for model creation but has limitations when it comes to analysis because it has no intelligence at the object level apart from their geometry and appearance for visualization.
Models with no support for behavior. These models are good at the object level but have no parametric intelligence. So, it is very laborious work o change or to modify anything. It offers safety against developing faulty perspectives of models.
Models that are composed of multiple 2D CAD reference files must be combined to define the building. In such cases, it's not possible to be sure about the viability and consistency of the generated model.
Models that allow changes to dimensions in one view are not automatically reflected in other views. This calls for errors that cannot be easily found.
